29 JANUARY 2019 Workshop – PASTEL AS PART OF MIXED MEDIA (PLAYING WITH PASTELS)

29 JANUARY 2019 Workshop – PASTEL AS PART OF MIXED MEDIA (PLAYING WITH PASTELS)

Pastels are often thought of as fragile, easy to fall off or something you can only paint with on paper. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Pastels have been around since the 1500s, and became very popular as an art medium with famous artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo. It became downright fashionable to have your portrait painted in pastels in the mid-18th century, then had a revival again in the early 19th century when artists such as Degas, Gauguin, Matisse, Monet, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec used it as a preferred media. Some of their artwork in pastels are still on view and in perfect condition today, with the colours as vivid as when the artist first applied them.

Teaser question: Can you tell what the Cups and Mug diptych was painted on? (answer at the bottom of post)

On Tuesday 29 January 2019 I will be teaching a workshop, using mostly hard and soft artists’ pastels, exploring different materials you can paint on with pastels.

In this 3-hour workshop, you’ll be introduced to:

  • examples of pastel paintings on different sub-structures such as different papers, canvas, wood board, photo board or photo paper;
  • how to prepare a surface to paint on with pastels;
  • learn to apply pastels on different surfaces.

Why limit your pastel artwork just paper?

In this workshop, Cristel will lead the students through the process of preparing a surface to paint on with pastels and explore some different materials to paint on.

There will be some examples to examine, then you’ll dive right into creating an artwork on a surface other than (just one layer of) paper, and use a number of media, including pastels, to take home at the end of class.
