As I was leafing through a book of portraits of tribesmen and women from around the world, this Afghan man seemed to smile back at me, inviting me to draw him. He had that little sparkle in his eye, that kind smirk, almost like he was thinking of a nice memory or a funny anecdote he’d heard earlier in the day. Doesn’t he look happy?
